Why Jehovah’s Witnesses Don’t See the Contradiction

Jehovah’s Witnesses keep their beliefs in separate categories. Think of them as boxes. Each belief is in its own separate box. And this is key: They never compare or contrast boxes. Thus, when beliefs contradict each other, a JW will never notice. If you show them, cognitive dissonance takes place. You might notice this as silence or a frown as they attempt to process this information. This is a good sign.

I remember being a Jehovah’s Witness and believing in one God, Jehovah the Father. When it came to Jesus, I believed He was created, a Master Worker, who came to be alongside the Father. Notice this sidesteps the issue: What kind of being is Jesus? Is He God, an angel, or merely human?

I would have said He is a god, but not the Father. A mighty God, but not the Almighty. Basically, a helper God. Notice I never compared this to scripture, which says there is only one true God. I basically believed in two gods, but never realized it!

Jehovah’s Witnesses continue to believe in two gods to this day; however, they would never say that because they don’t recognize it. They have to be led, step by step, and shown that they actually believe in two gods.

I used this recently when they came to my door.

Me: Why do you believe in two gods?

JW: We don’t believe in two gods. We believe in one God, Jehovah.

Me: Sure you do. You believe in the Almighty uncreated Father, and the little created god Jesus. That makes two gods.

JW: rendered speechless, tipping their heads and looking confused.

Since Jehovah’s Witnesses believe Jesus is the Archangel Michael, many of us try to focus on the deity of Christ when speaking with Jehovah’s Witnesses. This is a crucial issue since Jesus said, “Unless you believe I AM you will die in your sins.” John 8:24 So, having the right Jesus is essential for eternal life. And scripture says, “What must we do to be saved? Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, both you and your household.” Acts 16:30-31 And “There is no other name by which we can be saved.” Acts 4:12

Since Jehovah’s Witnesses have the wrong Jesus, how can we show them who Jesus is in the simplest, most straightforward way? This is what I use, and it leaves them speechless. No more arguments from JWs where they say, “Jesus never said I am God. Jesus never said worship me.” This ends all of that, so I share it here in the hopes that it will help you in your evangelism with Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Isaiah said Jesus is God. (This is a prophecy about Jesus, and the Watchtower says this also.)

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called

 Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6
NIV

John says Jesus is God. (JWs would need to use another translation, since their New World Translation has altered this verse. To get around this, I remind them, “Before the Watchtower Organization published the New World Translation, Jehovah’s Witnesses used the King James Version, since it’s on your website, surely there can’t be an objection to using it?”)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1 KJV

In Hebrews 1: Jehovah says Jesus is God.

But to the Son He says: “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. Hebrews 1:8 KJV

(I stop reading after saying Your throne O GOD is forever and ever, so they don’t miss the point.)

Do you really disagree with Isaiah, with John, and with Jehovah?

Don’t be surprised if the JW suddenly attacks your belief in the Trinity or the celebration of holidays. This is what they often do when it becomes apparent they have lost the argument. Rather than deal with the evidence, they become defensive and try to change the subject.

But in my experience, these three scriptures and the follow-up question have always rendered them speechless. When the argument ceases, you have made the point. Let the Holy Spirit do His work, convicting them. If you continue, you will miss the impact this has on them, and they will easily get sidetracked onto something else.
