Is Jesus God?

Who Is Jesus?

This is just one part, of examining what the scriptures say about Jesus. There are So many things that need to be examined, Is Jesus God? Is it proper to pray to Jesus? If Jesus is God why did He say the Father is greater that I am? Why did He always give all glory and honor to the Father, if He is God? Isn’t the fact that He is called the firstborn of all creation prove He was created?

Is Jesus the Alpha and Omega? Is it proper to worship Jesus? Jesus worshiped the Father so why would Christians worship the Son?
In this, part 1, we will examine what the Scriptures say about the Deity of Jesus.
(since Jehovah’s Witnesses used the King James Translation prior to the New World Translation, there should be no objection to this translation. Unless otherwise noted, King James is used throughout)

Let us examine the scriptures to see what it says.

1) In this first scripture we see Jesus is identified as mighty God, and everlasting Father.

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given:
and the government shall be upon his shoulder:
and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor,
The Mighty God,
The Everlasting Father,
The Prince of Peace. Isa. 9:6

2) In this second scripture, Jesus is identified as God.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.                 John 1:1
(*Using Bible Hub online, one can see 20 different translations render it this same way or very similarly, this is true of all scriptures quoted)

3) In this third scripture, the Father calls the Son,,,,God.

But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God,  is for ever and ever
Heb. 1:8

Which is quoted from Psalm 45:6 Thy Throne, O God, is forever and ever, and the righteous scepter is the scepter of his kingdom. In Psalms it is referring to the Father, in Hebrews this same Scripture is applied to the Son.

4) Notice here that it says that God purchased the church with his blood. Who died for us? It was not Jehovah was it? No, it was Jesus, yet here He is called God.

Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of GOD, which He hath purchased with His own blood.
Acts 20:28

5) Here it says plainly that Jesus Christ is the true God.

And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life. Jesus Christ. 1 John 5:20

6) Here Jesus is identified as the great God and Savior.

looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;   who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, Titus 2:13

7) In this scripture Jesus is said to be deity.

“For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form.” Col. 2:9

(Deity-divine status, quality, or nature. The creator and supreme being (in a monotheistic religion such as Christianity)

8) I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins. John 8:24
*note* in the Greek (he) is not there, notice this verse therefore in the following translations:

That is why I told you that you will die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am,  you’ll die in your sins.” International Standard

“I said to you that you shall die in your sins, for unless you shall believe that I am the living God, you shall die in your sins.”
Aramaic Bible in Plain English

Therefore I said unto you that ye shall die in your sins, for if ye do not believe that I am, ye shall die in your sins. Jubilee Bible 2000

I said therefore to you, that ye shall die in your sins; for unless ye shall believe that I am [he], ye shall die in your sins. Darby Bible Translation

*Interesting to note as well, that in the Kingdom Interlinear Translation in the 1969 Purple edition, on the Greek side, renders it as follows-

Kingdom Interlinear Translation  John 8:24  Therefore I said to you, you will die in the sins of you if ever for not you should believe that I am,
(on the English side the word he is added)

9) Again Jesus refers to Himself as the I am.

Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. King James Bible John 8:58

10) Doubting Thomas knew exactly who Jesus was, and when he referred to Jesus as God, was not corrected.

John 20:28 Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” 29Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.”

11) In Rev. Jesus is identified as the Alpha and Omega and also as the Almighty.

Rev. 1:7,8 Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

Ask yourself who is coming with clouds? Who was pierced? Yes it was Jesus, notice in the following verse how Jesus identifies himself. ‘I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord God, ‘who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.’ verse 8.
verse 12– I turned round to see the voice that was speaking to me.
verse 13–someone like a son of man,

The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. 15 His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. 16 In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance.
17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: ‘Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. 18 I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever!
12) Jesus is again identified as the First and the Last, or the Alpha and the Omega in Rev. 2:7
These are the words of him who is the First and the Last, who died and came to life again. Rev 2:7
13) For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. Col. 1:16,17
The Jews knew exactly who Jesus was claiming to be, which is why they wanted to kill him.
Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the Sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God. John 5:18
Why did the Jews think that claiming to be the Son of God was claiming to be God? They understood He was claiming to be Deity. They had seen and heard Jesus forgive sins.
14) Luke 5:20,21 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone? Luke 5:21 (NIV)
Remember these were learned men, they knew the law. They also knew, only God can forgive sins.
15) No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known. John 1:18 (NIV).
No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us. NLT
